Dental Emergencies and Toothaches

Man in agony with tooth painWe are proud to report that patients who visit our Merrick dental office regularly for dental cleanings, examinations and treatment have very few incidences of dental emergencies and toothaches. However, even with the best oral care, dental emergencies may arise. Should a dental emergency arise, call our office, at Progressive Dentistry Phone Number 516-378-8600, and we will make arrangements for you to be seen that day.

There are simple precautions you can take to avoid injuries or accidents to your teeth:

  • Avoid chewing hard things such as ice, popcorn kernels and hard candy, all of which can crack a tooth.
  • Use scissors to tear or cut things rather than your teeth.
  • When participating in sports or other recreational activities that may pose a danger to your teeth be sure to wear a mouthguard.

What To Do If You Knock Out A Permanent Tooth

Graphic of a boy with a knocked out toothShould a traumatic injury knock out a permanent tooth, hold the tooth by the crown and rinse off the root of the tooth in tepid water if its dirty. Do not scrub or remove any attached tissue fragments! Try to reinsert it in the socket and hold the tooth in place by biting on a clean gauze or cloth. If thats not possible, transport the tooth in a cup of milk or water and call our office as quickly as possible.
