What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns, or caps as you may have heard them called, are a type of dental restoration that envelops the tooth in order to strengthen it. Fillings or inlays, on the other hand, are held within the tooth. Crowns are used to correct a variety of dental ills.
What are dental crowns made of?
Dr. Levy use only the finest materials to custom craft and fit the dental crowns they fabricate. The results for you are a healthy smile with appealing esthetics and a natural feel.
While gold was once traditionally used, today Cosmetic Dentists Dr. Levy create beautiful esthetic porcelain crowns fused to a framework of high-tech ceramics. This design allows for a crown that is strong, long lasting, comfortable and at the same time natural looking
Alternatively, dental crowns are created using highly strong and esthetic porcelain fused to a substructure of gold alloy.

Key Benefits of Dental Crowns
Dr. Levy‘s artistry can create a beautiful, healthy-looking smile for you. Dental crowns help to keep your mouth healthy by preserving and strengthening much of your tooth’s natural structure. This prevents tooth loss and the subsequent degradation or your jawbone. It is normally a more conservative and advantageous procedure to save a tooth with a crown rather than have it extracted and replaced with a dental implant or bridgework.
What are the capabilities of dental crowns?
Dental crowns may be applicable if your teeth are severely broken down, crooked, malformed, discolored, cracked or cracking or weakened by large, unsightly fillings or root canal therapy.Dental crowns are also fitted to dental implants to replace one or even a whole mouth of missing teeth.
Dental crowns are used to correct a poor bite, functional chewing problems or close large gaps between teeth where food tends to lodge causing discomfort, gum infections, cavities and loss of supporting bone.
In front teeth, older fillings can both weaken the teeth and cause appearance problems due to staining or chipping. Porcelain crowns and dental bridges are suitable in cases where porcelain veneers are not.
Crown and bridgework is a very reliable solution for major dental problems caused through accidents, disease or wear and tear. Major problems can usually be corrected using dental crowns.
Many people have unexplained pain from filled back teeth, which is usually due to hairline cracks in the chewing part of the tooth. Placing dental crowns on these teeth relieves the pain and allows a return of full dental function for these teeth.
How long do dental crowns last?
These treatments are used for a long lasting correction of major dental problems. When done with precision, dental crowns are a long lasting solution. It is not unusual for these treatments to last for 20-to-30 years, which is as close to permanent as dental treatment can get.
How long does it take?
Fitting a dental crown requires two to four comfortable visits in our office. Initially, we shape the tooth and fit it with a temporary acrylic crown. Impressions are taken and a color is chosen to match your existing teeth for superb esthetics.
On a subsequent visit we will remove the temporary crown, and then fit and adjust the final crown. Finally, we will cement the crown into place and you have a new beautiful, natural feeling tooth.
