Over-The-Counter Tooth Whitening
In 2015, millions of Americans purchased do-it-yourself whitening products with sales topping $1.4 billion. The most popular purchases were for special toothpastes and chemical whitening products.
The misuse of whitening products can result in painful, even long-term issues. Anyone considering over-the-counter whitening (bleaching) should see a cosmetic dentist to evaluate if the contents of the product will aggravate any existing dental conditions that they may or may not be aware of.
Used improperly, over-the-counter whitening products can result in severe tooth sensitivity and gum irritation, bluish enamel, uneven whitening and–if the chemical manages to seep into a cracked tooth or an unfilled / untreated cavity –painful internal nerve damage can lead to root canal therapy.
The above side effects, except root canal therapy, are temporary. However, over bleaching teeth can turn them dull gray or translucent. With continued misuse, the enamel erodes off, making teeth weak and brittle. The damage is permanent. You may also destroy gum tissue or accelerate gum recession, which can expose tooth roots and make them susceptible to decay.
